| | Obituary | Arthur Van Blaricom passed away on Aug. 15, 1944, at the Pontiac State hospital, where he had been employed for the past 15 years.
He was born in Northumberland county, Ontario, June 27, 1869, and spent his boyhood days there, coming to Michigan in June, 1894. He settled on a wild 80 in Kingston township, enduring the hardships of pioneer life. On Jan. 14, 1897, he was united in marriage with May McCracken. To this union were born five children, two of whom passed away in infancy.
Those left to mourn their loss besides the widow are Foster Van Blaricom of Highland Park, Mrs. Maurice Kelley (Amy) of Flint, Mrs. Edna Sadler; five grandchildren, Clinton Perry, Eichard Van Blaricom, Keith Arthur, Dona Fay and Mona May Sadler; two brothers, Alciberis of Codrington, Ont., and Sheridan of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Deford Methodist church of which he had been a member for over 30 years. Burial was in Novesta cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews, Harvey Palmateer, Ross Van Blaricom, Oscar Valentine, Zeno Crittenden, Howard and Clare Patch.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Fred Johnston of Toronto, Ont., Mr. and Mrs. Ross Van Blaricom, David McCracken, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Little, Mrs. Florence Schneider, Mrs. Carmer Weston, Mrs. John Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Clare Patch and daughter, Wilda, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Patch and Oscar Valentine of Detroit, Foster Van Blaricom and Mr. and Mrs. L. Patch of Highland Park, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Patch and Mr. and Mrs. Eussell Barber of Royal Oak, Mr. and Mrs. Zeno Crittenden of Ferndale, Roy McCracken, Glendora McCracken and son, Billie, of Lupton, Mrs. Maurice Kelley of Flint, Clinton Sadler of Pontiac, and Mr. and Mrs. William Barthel of Northville.
The large floral tribute showed the esteem in which the deceased was held and will be ever appreciated by the family. |

| Obituary | Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 26, at the Deford Methodist church for Mrs. May Van Blaricom, who passed away on Tuesday, July 24, after 13 months' illness and suffering from an abdominal cancer.
Julia May McCracken was born in the village of Troy Corners, Troy township, Oakland county, Michigan, NOV. 15, 1880, the daughter of John and Julia McCracken. She came with her parents to Kingston township, Tuscola county, shortly after the forest fire of 1881; residing with her parents until Jan. 14, 1897, when she was united in marriage with Arthur W. Van Blaricom, also of Kingston township. They made their home on a farm in Kingston township until 1929 when they moved to Pontiac to become employees of the Michigan State hospital as housekeepers in charge of the employees' dormitory, in which capacity they continued until June, 1944, when Mrs. Van Blaricom was stricken with illness requiring an operation, causing her retirement. She returned to her home in Deford in August, 1944, after the death of her husband, who passed away following a gall bladder operation which had become necessary while she was also in the hospital under treatment. She made her home in Deford from August, 1944, until her death where she was visited by many relatives and a host of friends whom she always greeted cheerfully regardless of her pain and suffering. Many floral tokens were received and deeply appreciated by her during her illness. Her last hours were brightened by the presence of her son-in-law, Maurice E. Kelley, C. M. 2/c, who had been stationed in the South Pacific for the past two years, and who arrived on a 30-day leave in time to cheer her. His return was hastened by the Red Cross for which she was expressly thankful.
She is survived by a son, Foster J. Van Blaricom of Highland Park, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Maurice Kelley of Flint and Edna M. Sadler of Deford; five grandchildren, Clinton Perry Sadler, Richard V. Sadler, Keith A. Sadler, Mona May and Donna Fay Sadler. She is also survived by two brothers, David McCracken of Detroit and Frank McCracken of Highland Park; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Patch of Highland Park and Mrs. Claude Cameron of Prescott, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and a sister, and two children, Reid A. and Beulah M., both of whom died in infancy; and a granddaughter, Doris Jean Kelley, who also died in infancy.
Interment was made in the family plot in Novesta cemetery beside her husband and infant children. Services were conducted by Rev. H. C. Freeman, pastor of Deford church, where Mr. and Mrs. Van Blaricom had been members for several years. Nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kelley sang two selections. |
